This report highlights attendance statistics at 422 Quebec museums, interpretive centres, and exhibition spaces (excluding artist-run centres). In 2015, total attendance was 14.0 million, slightly below the record level from 2013 (14.2 million). The report notes that school attendance showed a recent decrease, falling from over 1 million in previous years to 843,000 in 2015.
The report indicates that the 30 most visited museums represented 75% of the attendance at all 422 museums in 2015. Fifteen of these 30 most visited museums are in Montreal, seven are in the Quebec City region, and eight are elsewhere in Quebec.
The report also highlights the importance of the summer season for Quebec museums and heritage organizations: July and August represent 36% of total attendance.
For 22 art museums, total attendance was 1.8 million in 2015, a figure that has remained relatively stable over the past few years but represents a 35% increase from 2003. This is the highest such increase among different types of museums and is much higher than the 13% increase in attendance at all museums and heritage organizations between 2003 and 2015.
In 2015, school attendance represented 5.1% of the 1.8 million in total attendance at art museums, below the average of 6.6% for all museums and heritage organizations. Off-site attendance for the 22 art museums represented 4.7% of the total, well below the average of 8.8% for all Quebec museums and heritage organizations.
